Doing each rosette separately, intending to stitch them all together in the end. <div><br></div><div>I soon realized that with my limited color scheme I'd have to get a lot more organized, if I didn't want pink to but up against pink. I decided to stitch what I had together and work outward from there. It's very satisfying to see it come together but it could get unwieldy towards the end. It's a 21' 1987 Toyota Escaper 4 cylinder putt-putter. It pretty much tops out at 60 mph giving a whole new meaning to slow sewing. Slow life is more like it. After the complete chaos and stress of dealing with our house renovations due to our son's lead poisoning issues, and having multiple nightmare contractors, we decided we needed a break. So...into the unknown for now. Our house in Mpls is still our permanent residence if anybody feels the need to send me mail, but more than likely, I'll be coming to your town sometime soon! </div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghFCvil_AoeGgK-8I6SFLBcrM5SXY7_r9o0SukOvzT2MT5S_odROWPCgzNQpfMwCBrqPJdNJBeZxDK0tpEJRMeve4DbjE8ZgG-iZ0pP3wueeTuyHcfc4XAlj6sfa8g2sjg2im2sQeILlo/s640/blogger-image-797478528.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghFCvil_AoeGgK-8I6SFLBcrM5SXY7_r9o0SukOvzT2MT5S_odROWPCgzNQpfMwCBrqPJdNJBeZxDK0tpEJRMeve4DbjE8ZgG-iZ0pP3wueeTuyHcfc4XAlj6sfa8g2sjg2im2sQeILlo/s640/blogger-image-797478528.jpg"></a></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The inside has a tiny kitchen and bathroom across the back and a dinette that folds into a bench/bed, seen here modeled by Maxell (photo by Graham). She has filled in a lot of gaps of family history on my maternal side and is generally a funny and environmentally conscious human. A pretty good letter-writer too. One of the things she brings up a lot is the lack of sunshine where she chooses to live( it's a morain, and apparently, a meteorological fluke). They have a solar bank for electricity and chart peak sun throughout the year. Resulting in snippets of emails that say things like "14 days of sun in 4 MONTHS!". This dear aunt also suffers from S.A.D., so this is a dangerous combination. While I know it's wrong to try to 'cheer up' a depressed person, I thought I'd try to sew a spot of sunshine for her.<div><br></div><div><br>I have recently treated myself to the <a href="http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/p/hex-n-more.html?m=1">Hex-n-more ruler</a> to work out a design for another quilt and I thought I'd have a quick sample of it's powers. I don't usually go in for gadget rulers, preferring free things like cereal box templates, but this one is quite well designed and all my pieces were hella accurate. This was my first layout:<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYM_OYYF__OwPMlgDxpPO6jIEH9_g614gCT8ztOAoHVcwILdX29Gm9068uOD1-DLKu6Koexih4JXEgB4-aLDJacfo4NdhsmXBG2I7YRPaZu0DeipUzXiqtv0QViBhi-NUrgpvewboMBg8/s640/blogger-image-1729886086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYM_OYYF__OwPMlgDxpPO6jIEH9_g614gCT8ztOAoHVcwILdX29Gm9068uOD1-DLKu6Koexih4JXEgB4-aLDJacfo4NdhsmXBG2I7YRPaZu0DeipUzXiqtv0QViBhi-NUrgpvewboMBg8/s640/blogger-image-1729886086.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Not very sunny! We are leaving our house for a little while this spring and need to pack everything up。This has brought me to the realization that I have more fabric than I can use and a lot of it is not appealing to me anymore. Couple that with the need for $$, to help with the boy's condition, and it's time for a major fabric sell-off. Working with the mantra 'Someday equals never.' running through my head has helped a lot. So far I've sorted about a twelfth of my stuff. It's pretty slow going but therapeutic(☆_☆)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So, who wants some fabric? (But not the usual one...)Do you know that feeling? The one where you feel the neeeeed for some such fabric just because you keep seeing it everywhere on social media? There's all the hype of a new print release, a blog hop, giveaways, lots of amazing quilts and bags, 'famous' bloggers and designers going on and on, etc. Sometimes I get caught up in all of that and buy the fabric and sometimes I wait for it to go on sale and buy it then. But I always buy it. Frequently I look at fabric on my shelves and wonder why I bought that or what it's for. Often I don't even like it. I just get caught up in shopping. <div><br></div><div>Which should be unlike me. I have always been anti-consumer culture and never buy new if I can help it. I don't buy new clothes, new furniture, new dishes, new cars. Why is my sewing so different? Goodness knows there is enough printed cotton on this planet already. So why do I keep obsessively buying more fabric than I can sew or afford?</div><div><br></div><div>I'm not sure of the answer and I don't think it's a simple one. It has to do with addiction, and hoarding(actual hoarding tendencies, not just funny coffee mug slogans), and wanting to belong to something. There's more to it too. The real question for me now is 'Can I stop?'. </div><div><br></div><div>The other real question, which is less portant, is 'What the heck do I do with all of this fabric?'. Destash coming to an etsy shop near you...</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Rozina D.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14481531228034224738noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6166784411723964776.post-58305087514371454782015-11-16T12:12:00.001-08:002015-11-16T12:12:29.007-08:00La Passacaglia Rosette 6:1<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I finished my first rosette 6. I had to cut up quite a bit to match the pentagons but the cuteness was worth it. Use it or lose it, as they say. I also discovered that Alison Glass's Party Streamers fabric is based on the same size of diamond as the ones in this quilt. Lots of possibilities there!</div><br></div>Rozina D.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14481531228034224738noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6166784411723964776.post-61542151890667955012015-11-10T17:20:00.001-08:002015-11-10T17:20:32.194-08:00La passacaglia progress<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I decided to use this as a Rosette 4, for those of you familiar with the pattern. For those not familiar---it is a finished piece. Where the stars are missing, it will mesh up with other rosettes. I'm pretty stoked about this one but I'm going to aim for stronger contrast in a few more.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt_S_e-0hu9Eim6aYWF0QmX9S0dHinFOVttiJZs7iV875EXl_ftN1xo2O5xn5NM0ErZKXc1B62DB2hrO_RbY7qZ-1MBPBRD3ZhfBMHYjFlhXs_dr2MrMhBYqoVhIxjsMIM6zrZsm52s6I/s640/blogger-image--2085889716.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt_S_e-0hu9Eim6aYWF0QmX9S0dHinFOVttiJZs7iV875EXl_ftN1xo2O5xn5NM0ErZKXc1B62DB2hrO_RbY7qZ-1MBPBRD3ZhfBMHYjFlhXs_dr2MrMhBYqoVhIxjsMIM6zrZsm52s6I/s640/blogger-image--2085889716.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This is the start of my next rosette. My partner surprised me with Willyne Hammerstein's Millefiore Quilts book for my birthday and I've been aching to start one of her amazing patterns ever since. I'm throwing my hat into the very popular La Passacaglia ring as it is one of the most intricate quilts I've ever seen. I've started by using an English paper piecing method but I may try a few different techniques. The pattern is split up into separate rosettes, known as cogs on Instagram, so there is room for experimentation.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Some of the gals in my quilt guild are taking a stab at this pattern too so we formed a support group where we discuss techniques and share tutorials and helpful hints. Kind of a paradox to only have time for something that takes so long. It's really more about portability. Having a very easily distracted and mobile 15 month old means no time actually sitting down to sew, but rather doing a bit here and there. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The photo is my progress on the pattern Daisy Do by Jen Kingwell (http://jenkingwelldesigns.blogspot.com/?m=1 ) from her book Quilt Lovely. I plan to make a small quilt with this as the center and a pieced border, to be ready for the next baby quilt gift request(if that's not cheating...). </div>Rozina D.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14481531228034224738noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6166784411723964776.post-78074533438380643212015-01-11T06:40:00.001-08:002015-01-11T06:40:58.860-08:00Quilts for Graham's family<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT3wocMeFxdoUJCrimrcb4yvvPuHJAmbpKwfyUQQhQvfnBzX2qjVaOVA4Qfap7z74gOiQFwkYIKL0o-SvVk8-1xLZ5ZVW_9UA_hrilTBDq6AwKiVzUq0rEHKINkSEEWyLgNJ4D3cATiu4/s640/blogger-image--1663442661.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT3wocMeFxdoUJCrimrcb4yvvPuHJAmbpKwfyUQQhQvfnBzX2qjVaOVA4Qfap7z74gOiQFwkYIKL0o-SvVk8-1xLZ5ZVW_9UA_hrilTBDq6AwKiVzUq0rEHKINkSEEWyLgNJ4D3cATiu4/s640/blogger-image--1663442661.jpg"></a>I finished this quilt in November of 2013 for my partner's parents. They have been really helpful and supportive and have treated me like family. So what to give to people that have everything? A quilt, of course. The inspiration for this quilt was their back-to-the-land lifestyle of raising food, keeping bees, and hunting deer on their 20 acres. The design is loosely based on a pattern by Boo Davis from the book Dare to be Square and a pattern by Elizabeth Hartman called Honey. I added a paper pieced bee in the upper right corner and used fabrics that echo their interests.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjilFLSN1iMBF24xlYS2RhH7YuGpn8Axf_yb4aB_rqVIkBsPEW1mE61qPCcsXho-q7DGS6V45ePGHeQnrdRDP8ENuibDS_FNOXertVDL19tHDZj8jvtgooO2xTKbQzTuMZGJadL3eLTqgg/s640/blogger-image--1495354708.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjilFLSN1iMBF24xlYS2RhH7YuGpn8Axf_yb4aB_rqVIkBsPEW1mE61qPCcsXho-q7DGS6V45ePGHeQnrdRDP8ENuibDS_FNOXertVDL19tHDZj8jvtgooO2xTKbQzTuMZGJadL3eLTqgg/s640/blogger-image--1495354708.jpg"></a>This little quilt is for my nephew Harper to celebrate his birth. I put a lot of pressure on myself to make his baby quilt the best quilt I've ever made, but in the end, I think I could've done better. While it would be great if I could make or sew every gift I give, I know that isn't practical or even possible ( I don't happen to have a ceramics studio in my garage, ya know?). Fortunately for me the Mpls./ St. Paul area is rife with handmade crafts, creative entrepreneurs, and a ton of great events and outlets that showcase them. Craft fair season is right around the corner and I am going to highlight three of the best coming events in Minneapolis this year, go over a little craft fair etiquette, and talk about a couple of brick and mortar shops that sell local crafters' goods. I thought it would be nice to join a group that would help me challenge myself and encourage me to try new things. I sat in on a meeting of the Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild (or mmqg, for short...) and I loved it! We do this fun block lotto each month where we all try to make a few blocks of a specific pattern or color palette and then a lucky participant wins the whole stack to do what they wish with. It is really great for me to make blocks I wouldn't normally think of trying and push my boundaries when it comes to color and fabric choices. </div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_R9iYOTJMva3HXT-IhHfntO2Nd6rbwM1ZAmwXdeHV_n0Do8r9LSCkYOwKVsr409uWKXqmri73yItoapOCRBkbjBV8B8Iz1RYMeotTl56-Neq47UWcBxyxsAjkUNDhq8uF_6XkIE1PCsE/s640/blogger-image--675272479.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_R9iYOTJMva3HXT-IhHfntO2Nd6rbwM1ZAmwXdeHV_n0Do8r9LSCkYOwKVsr409uWKXqmri73yItoapOCRBkbjBV8B8Iz1RYMeotTl56-Neq47UWcBxyxsAjkUNDhq8uF_6XkIE1PCsE/s640/blogger-image--675272479.jpg"></a>This fractured star block had the wildest chartreuse green. For a New Year's challenge I am trying to incorporate more solid colored fabric into my quilts. I picked up some shot cottons a while back at Treadle Yard Goods in St. Paul and I figured they are as close to solid as I am likely to get. (Shot cottons are made with a yarn dyed technique where the warp and the weft are different colors giving them a depth and subtlety not found in regular printed fabrics.) Since I have always enjoyed string quilts and am drowning in scraps this was just the project to start the year off right. It is really freeing to just sit down and sew bits together since I usually do paper piecing, which can be a little fussy. After I had thought of doing something like this I found a book called <u>15 Minutes of Play </u> by Victoria Findlay Wolfe which goes in depth into creating modern string/ scrap fabric and quilts. Although this isn't a quilt from that book, it is definitely inspired by the technique and philosophy outlined in it. <div>

The best part of sewing this is seeing all the precious little scraps and remembering where they came from and whom I was sewing them together for originally.<br />

I set up a quilting tent with fabric, thread, scissors, books, and other sewing supplies. Everyone was encouraged to try their hand at stitching and anyone that wanted to leave a piece or block with me could contribute to a group quilt. A few people took fabric and inspiration back home across the country with them and mailed the blocks in later. Here are a few pics of the top so far. As you can see a lot of people incorporated embroidery and applique as well as commemorating specific days and events at the Fair. I used a few neutrals and a hand printed linen for borders as well as a bright poppy print. This one will be hand quilted and mailed back to the hosts of the Fair at the Last Resort. {Hopefully before the world ends...}</div>

The smaller piece is a receiving blanket that converts to a standard pillow sham later on. I machine quilted this one in a star meander that loops back onto itself. It was finished right before Halloween 2012.</div>

This is a quilt I finished 2 years ago for my nephew Levi. I recently got to visit it and get a few snapshots. It was designed by me with inspiration from fields, sunflowers, and dandelions. I machine quilted it with a rambling design of curls, butterflies, and stars.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMMGXMLsKWdetLwASmZC1sNFDXHDrMQuGUa8djP2g_DW5A9RhyFJFMQ1yRiQtassJK__wuDrSRiWRnJnv_zMAktyqgSVZ0hKNiMFYf7K03C3AuQNcgiy16CXkuTf80yBOuUceDYjK69fY/s1600/IMG_2134.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMMGXMLsKWdetLwASmZC1sNFDXHDrMQuGUa8djP2g_DW5A9RhyFJFMQ1yRiQtassJK__wuDrSRiWRnJnv_zMAktyqgSVZ0hKNiMFYf7K03C3AuQNcgiy16CXkuTf80yBOuUceDYjK69fY/s320/IMG_2134.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
